ONE Friday Fights 169 Main Event Result: Sunvo Edges Khunponnoi In Tactical Three-Round Battle

Sunvo Torfunfarm put on a magnificent kicking display to narrowly edge out fellow Thai slugger Khunponnoi Sor Sommai via split decision in their flyweight Muay Thai main event of ONE Friday Fights 169. 

The bout went down Friday, September 4, airing live in Asia primetime from Bangkok’s iconic Lumpinee Stadium, with ONE Fight Night 47: Stamp vs. Flores on Prime Video set to follow on those same hallowed grounds in less than 24 hours.

As expected from two technical combatants of “the art of eight limbs,” the opening round unfolded as a measured chess match, each fighter alternating strikes to probe for openings. Sunvo’s length gave his body kicks greater impact, while Khunponnoi’s fiery one-twos consistently tested his compatriot’s tight guard.

The Sor Sommai representative found a crack, however, noticing that Sunvo retreated behind a high guard after launching his kicks. Khunponnoi exploited it, digging body punches in the split second his opponent reset to open up some early separation.

Sunvo came out with renewed intent in the second canto, doubling up on his kicks and adding long hooks to catch Khunponnoi on the sway. Unfazed by the tactical adjustment, the 33-year-old brushed the kicks away, tucked his chin, and countered with a massive right hand.

Despite the heavy pressure, Sunvo stayed composed, timing his counters with sharp jabs and stinging left kicks to the midsection to close out the frame.

Knowing round three would decide the match, the TDed99 standout hunted for a momentum shift. The dynamic Thai phenom began catching Khunponnoi’s kicks to immediately return fire with punishing strikes. Moments later, a rapid three-punch combination to the body momentarily halted his veteran opponent’s forward rush.

Khunponnoi valiantly refused to back down, continuing to march forward behind his heavy boxing combinations until the final bell. However, Sunvo’s tactical adjustments ultimately earned him the slight edge on the scorecards. The magnificent effort secured a hard-fought split decision victory and pushed his career record to 54-20.
