Just a week after a thrilling doubleheader in Bangkok, Thailand, ONE Championship returned to the capital city for ONE Friday Fights 128.
The event went down live in Asia primetime on October 10, where a debuting star showcased her family’s fighting legacy in the featured bout of the evening, and a Scottish tactician scored a life-changing knockout in the main event.
If you missed any of the action, here’s what went down this past Friday night.
Stephen “El Matador” Irvine became the latest star from ONE Friday Fights to earn a US$100,000 contract and a spot on the promotion’s main roster after decimating Rambong Sor Therapat at the 2:46 mark of round one.
Their 130-pound Muay Thai main event battle opened with a bang as the short and stocky Rambong pushed his way past Irvine’s defense and into swinging range.
Once there, he cast punches at the Scotsman while the latter took a step back and replied with body kicks. Little did the Thai know that those body kicks from Irvine would set up the fight-ending shot.
The Scottish fighter threw a kick, and Rambong went to catch and counter again, but this one came not to his body but over the top of his arms. Irvine’s shin planted itself onto Rambong’s neck, and he went sideways and down.
That was the last we saw of the Thai as the camera cut to an elated Irvine celebrating the walk-off victory, which improved his that saw him join teammate Nico Carrillo on the main roster of the world’s largest martial arts organization.
Thailand’s Duangdawnoi “Little Star” Looksaikongdin scored a remarkable win over Australia’s Kim “Lil K” Townsend in their 107-pound Muay Thai fight in the featured bout, evening the score on a rivalry that dates back to 2016.
Sister-in-law to former ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Champion Rodtang “The Iron Man” Jitmuangnon and elder sibling of Sangarthit Looksaikongdin, Duangdawnoi damaged her old foe early on with an elbow that left a crevice running through Townsend’s forehead – but the latter never flinched.
After multiple checks and approvals to keep fighting from the ringside doctor, Townsend pressed forward with rapid punch combinations that Duangdawnoi evaded and countered with the craftiness that only someone who grew up alongside 16 sibling fighters could pull off.
The Thai’s output scored her an eight-count midway through the fight, though Townsend jumped to her feet and kept gunning for her opponent.
On the back foot, “Little Star” pumped her piston-like jab in Townsend’s face, guided the point of her elbow toward her forehead, and cracked her chin with right punches.
When the fight came to a close, the judges’ unanimous decision was a mere formality. Duangdawnoi picked up her debut win in ONE, scored her 71st career victory, and redeemed herself against her former tormentor.
